EMV chip reader failures prevent card payments from being processed. This is typically caused by a dirty card slot, pending firmware updates, or physical damage to the reader. This guide walks through diagnosis and resolution.
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Clean the chip card slot: use a credit card cleaning card, or gently insert and remove a clean card slowly to dislodge debris. Never use compressed air directly into the slot.
- Ensure the customer inserts the chip card correctly: chip facing up and fully inserted into the slot. The card must remain in the slot until prompted to remove it.
- If 'Card Error' or 'Chip Read Error' appears, remove the card and reinsert. If the error persists after 3 attempts, fall back to swipe.
- Perform a hard reboot of the Clover device (see frozen screen guide for device-specific reboot steps) and retry.
- Check for pending Clover OS updates that may include payment terminal firmware fixes: Settings > About > Check for Updates.
- If the chip reader consistently fails on multiple cards after a reboot and cleaning, the card reader hardware may be damaged. Contact KloverSupport for a device evaluation.
📌 Important Note: Swipe fallback is available as a backup but carries higher fraud liability for merchants. Use it only as a temporary measure while arranging device repair or replacement.
Frequently Asked Questions
Clover prompts for swipe fallback after repeated failed chip reads. If this is happening frequently, the chip slot may need cleaning or the reader may be failing.
This is controlled at the processor level, not the device. Contact your merchant processor to modify card acceptance policies.
NFC and chip reader issues are separate. Check that NFC is enabled in Settings > Connections and the antenna area is not obstructed.
